Description
This is a barn located approximately 30 metres south-east of Cross Farmhouse, dating from the 16th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles that have a black unglazed surface. The barn has five bays arranged in a north-west to south-east orientation, with an aisle only on the south-west side. The central entrance doors on the north-east side are blocked, and there are nine 20th-century windows on the same side, along with a large modern entrance at the south-east end. At the north-west end, there is a 20th-century hipped extension.
The barn features jowled posts, heavy studding, arched arcade braces, and a simple splayed and bridled scarf in the arcade plate. It has curved tension braces set inside the studs and a small area of original wattle and daub infill at the north-west end. The tiebeams are supported by arched braces, and the roof has clasped purlins with arched wind braces. This barn is noted for its unusually heavy construction for its period and its distinctive design, which includes large entrance doors on one side and no doorway on the aisled side.
