Description
Larks in the Wood is a house dating from the late 15th century to early 16th century, with later alterations and 20th-century extensions. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure, with a crosswing on the right side. The roof is red plain tiled, hipped with a gablet on the crosswing, and extends over a 20th-century addition on the left. The house has one storey and attics, with a window arrangement of three and two C20 small paned casements. There is a central C20 panelled door and an original red brick chimney stack that is now plastered. The jettied crosswing has a moulded bressumer at the rear. Inside, there is a three-centre arch with sunk spandrels, a cambered mantel beam above an inserted inglenook fireplace, and stop-chamfered beams. The bridging joists are moulded in two quadrant and ogee styles, and the floor joists feature foliated stops. There are two round-headed doorways leading to a former screens passage, and the storey posts are jowled. The crosswing has a well-preserved roof structure with perfect two-armed chamfered crown posts. Additionally, there is a pair of doors from the Gaiety Theatre in London. The house is of very good quality for its type and is situated on a moated site.
