Description
Layfield is a Grade II listed building located on Stour Street in Cavendish. This structure consists of 16th and 17th century timber-framed and plastered houses that have been combined into a single tenement. It is believed to have served as a workhouse, with overseer's accounts dating back to 1758, which mention an agreement with William Shackloc and his wife as governor.
The building features a two-storey gabled block at the eastern end, which dates from the 16th century and has a jettied upper storey on the south front. The west wing, which is one storey with attics, is from the 17th century. The windows are primarily casements, with some featuring leaded lights, and there is a four-panel door. The roof is tiled and includes two gabled dormers.
Layfield, along with the adjoining house, The Red House, and Mumfords, forms a notable group of buildings.
