Description
The Red House is a 16th century timber-framed and plastered house located on Stour Street in Cavendish. It features a two-storey gabled block at the west end, which has a jettied upper storey, and a single-storey wing with an attic and cellar on the east end. The jettied upper storey of the west block is supported by a bressumer that is carved with running leaf ornamentation and rests on brackets with remnants of shafts. The gable slightly projects and has curved braces beneath the apex. The windows are 20th century casements with glazing bars. The roof is tiled and includes two gabled dormers on the south front. Inside, the house has moulded and carved ceiling joists and beams, also featuring running leaf ornamentation, along with two doorways that have carved spandrels. The Red House, along with the adjoining Layfield and Mumfords, forms a group.
