Description
Nos 28 to 40 on Church Street are a range of seven timber-framed and plastered houses built by James Beadle in 1714. An oval plaster panel on the front displays the date 1714 along with the initials T W S N, and previously included ER and WS, which have since worn away. The houses are two storeys high with attics and feature an eight-window range with casements that have glazing bars. The roofs are tiled and include four gabled dormers, mostly fitted with lattice leaded lights. The building underwent reconditioning in the 20th century. Originally, these houses served as a workhouse. Nos 22 to 40 form a group, which also includes Nos 42 to 48, Nos 1 and 3, No 7 (Woolpack Inn), No 18 and Smithy, and Nos 20 to 30, along with the Parish Church of St Nicholas and the Vicarage at Chippinghill.
