Description
The building is a cartlodge, now functioning as a shelter shed, located 60 metres south of Coggeshall Abbey. It dates from the 16th century or earlier and is constructed with a timber frame, weatherboarded, and has a roof made of corrugated iron. The structure consists of two bays aligned north-south and was originally open on both sides, but the east side is now boarded while the west side remains open. It features jowled posts and arched braces connecting to the wallplates and tiebeams. The roof has clasped purlins, and in the middle truss, the purlins are supported and clasped by unusual queen posts with enlarged heads, lacking a collar. The south gable retains original wattle and daub, while the timber at the north end is heavily weathered and adjoins an early 17th-century barn.
