Description
This building is a barn dating from the late 16th century to the early 17th century, located approximately 15 metres northeast of Sewells Farmhouse. It is constructed with a timber frame and is weatherboarded. The roof is gabled and clad with asbestos, featuring a central gabled midstrey. The barn has four aisled bays and a side purlin roof construction, with some jowled braces supporting the tie beams. The threshing floor is made of herringbone patterned brick, and there is a halved and bladed scarf joint at the top plates. Attached to the barn is a 17th-century cartlodge, which consists of four bays and is made from similar materials, featuring a ridge board roof construction. The cartlodge is included for its group value. The use of jowled braces to tie beams is particularly unusual in Essex.
