Description

Gibraltar Mill is a tower windmill that has been converted into a dwelling. It dates back to the early 18th century and was converted in 1934. The mill is made of plastered red brick and features a boarded cap. Originally built in two stages, it was octagonal and stood at a height of 6.10 metres before being raised to 9.77 metres, which changed its shape to a circular plan. The wall thickness at the base is 1.20 metres. There is a single-storey domestic extension to the northeast, constructed of plastered brick with a shingled roof. The mill has four floors, each with 20th-century casement windows. It features a boat-shaped cap, stocks, and skeleton sails, but lacks a fantail. The overall height of the structure is 13.44 metres. Historical records indicate that the earliest documentation of the mill dates back to 1707, and it is believed to have been built after the great storm of 1703, which destroyed many mills. It was constructed as an experimental tower mill with exceptionally thick walls, shortly after the sieges of Gibraltar in 1704-1705. Although it was not commercially successful, it was converted into a cottage with an inserted stack in the wall. The mill was restored to operation in 1754 and raised to its current height. It fell into disrepair between 1899 and 1904 due to storm damage, after which it was fitted with the current fantail gear. The mill originally had one pair of stones, and some of the equipment remains in place.
