Description

A pair of attached cottages dated 1835, located on Burrows Road in Earls Colne. The cottages are built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern with a slate roof. They have a simple, square plan and a shared chimney stack, facing south. They are two storeys high, with a 2-window arrangement on the front elevation. The original windows are sash windows with 20 lights each, set within segmental arches. Two additional first-floor sash windows have been inserted. Each cottage has an entrance in its end wall, framed by a semi-circular brick arch. A plaque in the right gable displays the inscription 'H.N.C. 1835', referring to Henry Holgate Carwardine. Nos 9 and 11, together with Nos 13 and 15, comprise the most significant group of 19th-century estate cottages remaining in the Braintree District.
