Description
Priory Farmhouse is a house that dates from the mid-16th century, mid-17th century, and early 19th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber framed, roughcast rendered, and has a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The building features a mid-16th century middle range facing south, a mid-17th century wing at the right end that extends forwards, and an early 19th century wing at the left end that also extends forwards, creating a half-H plan.
There is an axial stack at the right end of the middle range and an external stack at the rear of the left wing. To the left of the left wing, there is a lean-to conservatory, and at the rear of the right wing, there is a single-storey extension with a hipped roof. The house has two storeys. On the ground floor, there is one 20th-century casement window and one 18th-century sash window with 12 lights. The first floor has two 20th-century casement windows, and there are no windows at the front of the left wing.
The entrance features a six-panel door, with the upper four panels being glazed, and it has a simple flat canopy. There is a recessed panel with the inscribed date of 1835 in the right stack. Inside, there are stop-chamfered beams, moulded joists with vine-leaf carving, and original fireplaces. The roofs of the main range were rebuilt in the 19th century. The name "Priory Farmhouse" is somewhat misleading, as this was a copyhold tenement of the Earldom manor, and the main range was likely built for Joan, the second wife of Thomas Rolte, in 1540.
