Description
Whitehouse Farmhouse is a house from the early 17th century that has been altered in the 20th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof made of red clay corrugated tiles. The building has an L-shaped plan with wings extending to the northeast and southeast. There is an axial chimney stack in the northeast wing and an internal side chimney stack in the southeast wing. The house has two storeys.
On the southeast elevation, there is a 20th-century door and three 20th-century casement windows on each floor, and the exterior has been completely modernised. Some of the timber framing is exposed inside, featuring jowled posts and heavy studding. The axial beams are plain-chamfered with lamb's tongue stops in both wings, while the joists have a horizontal section and are unchamfered.
Notably, the walls of both wings have been raised approximately 1.25 metres above the original wall plates, and the internal tie beams have been removed or altered for doorways. The unusual layout suggests that the building may have originally consisted of two houses in a 'Unit System' group, intended for two households working the same land, which were later combined into a single residence.
