Description
Brook Cottage is a mid-to-late 18th-century cottage located on Kingston Road, Great Eversden. It is a timber-frame building, originally with two rooms, and has undergone later alterations. The exterior is plastered and colourwashed, with a thatched roof and a brick stack projecting from the left end. The cottage has a two-window front, featuring 2-light horizontal sliding sash windows on both floors. A central plank door provides access to the interior. A casement window sits above a lean-to on the right-hand side, which has a pantile roof, a door, and a small window facing forward. A 20th-century flat-roofed extension is present on the left-end, with a tiny window positioned above the stack. A 20th-century pantile-roofed extension is also at the rear.
Inside, the cottage features simple chamfered bridging beams and an open fireplace with a bressumer and hood. A 20th-century staircase is also present. The back wall has been removed to wall-plate level, with only a single doorway allowing access to the end extensions. The original roof structure is likely still in place, consisting of rafters rising to a ridge piece.
Locally, it is believed the cottage was once the home of the brook-keeper, and represents an uncommon survival of a small, two-unit dwelling.
