Description

Paynes Farmhouse is a house dating from about 1600, with a crosswing and a main range built in the 17th century. The crosswing has a timber frame, with a roughcast rendered first floor and a red brick ground floor. It has a tiled roof and three bays. The first floor was originally jettied at the south end and west side, featuring a dragon beam visible internally at the corner. This jetty was later underbuilt in the late 17th or early 18th century. Casement windows are to the gable end, and a hoist opening is visible on the side wall at first floor level. The main range was likely timber framed and cased in red brick on both the inner and outer walls, also with a tiled roof. It has a red brick axial ridge stack and an end stack. The house has a lobby entry and a three-room plan, with two storeys and an attic. A plat band runs between the storeys and returns to the gable end, above three gable dormers. The first-floor windows were remodelled and enlarged in the 19th century, now consisting of a range of four hung sashes with a central glazing bar. The bay opposite the stack projects slightly to accommodate the lobby. The entrance doorway has a late 18th- or early 19th-century six-panelled door. The ground floor has three 19th-century cross-frame casements in original openings. Internally, a reset early 16th century six-panelled door is present, along with abutting hearths. Framing is visible in the wing, including jowled main posts and braced tie beams.
