Description

Thatches is a cottage dating to the late 17th century, with an extension added around 1940. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with a long straw thatched roof, half-hipped in shape. A prominent original ridge stack is constructed of narrow red and yellow brick. Originally a four-bay design with a lobby entry, it was extended on the south side to form a T-plan layout. The cottage has two storeys and an attic. Around 1940, lozenge-shaped leaded light casement windows were installed. The original doorway is now located within the extension wing opposite the stack. The c.1940 extension is rendered and thatched, with a gable end to the road featuring a thatched oriel window to the attic. The interior retains exposed timber framing, with tabled scarf joints to short lengths of timber within the middle rail. There are also abutting inglenook hearths.
