Description

The screen wall and outbuildings, along with two boundary walls and a former entrance to the stable yard, are located to the north and west of Odsey House. They date from around 1730 and were possibly built for the Third Duke of Devonshire. Constructed from red brick with gauged brick dressings, the screen wall to the north-west connects the former kitchen to the stable range. The outbuildings at the rear may include game larders and an ice house. The wall features seven unequal bays separated by small brick pilasters, a moulded string course with recessed panels above, and a moulded cornice. It has two segmental-headed archways with brick imposts and a keyblock, while the central archway is topped with a segmental pedimented limestone sundial, which is incised with Roman numerals. To the right, there are two hung sash windows. The boundary walls between the stable and coach house have rusticated gate piers, which have been reduced and now feature 20th-century ball finials; the opening has been recently blocked. The wall beyond the coach house and stable block to the south-east ends in a plain pier. Originally, the walls may have been decorated with urns with finials and lion masks, similar to those at the entrance to Odsey in Guilden Morden, which are not currently in place and may have been designed by William Kent, as noted in a report from 1950.
