Description
Odsey Grange is a house that was formerly known as the Jockey House, built around 1705, with alterations made in the late 18th century and further additions in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of red local brick and features a plain tiled hipped roof. It has two storeys and five symmetrical bays, with a central doorcase from the late 18th century that has a pediment, a moulded architrave, and a six-panelled door. The ground floor includes four flush-framed twelve-paned hung sash windows set in segmental brick arches, while the first floor has five similar windows with flat brick arches. The eaves cornice is coved and moulded.
Inside, there is an original closed string staircase with a single flight, featuring plain and turned balusters on the landing. The ceiling beams are stop-chamfered, and there is a complete first-floor panelled room to the south, which has raised and fielded panels of two heights. The house also contains two-panelled early 18th-century doors and various other 18th and 19th-century features. The Jockey House and stables were part of a racing establishment owned by the Second and Third Dukes of Devonshire and may have been among the buildings "newly erected for race-horses" by Thomas Fountaine and John Duckett of Lincoln's Inn before 1705, prior to the sale of the property to Robert Chester.
