Description

Rectory Farmhouse is a house dating back to the 15th century, with significant additions and alterations in the 16th and 1772. It began as an open hall, to which a crosswing was added in the 16th century, and a main range was built in 1772. The house is timber framed, with rendered sections and red brick. The roofs are tiled, with end and ridge stacks.

The original 15th-century open hall has two bays and two storeys, featuring 20th-century windows and openings, and a rebuilt ridge stack. The north crosswing, dating from the 16th century, is three bays wide and also has two storeys with 20th-century openings.

The 1772 main range to the south is built of red brick, with some burnt brick headers, and has timber framing to the rear. The west gable end bears the inscription "1772" and "TW." It features a tiled roof with end parapets, kneelers, a dentil eaves cornice, and flush end stacks. The symmetrical facade has three hipped dormers and five twelve-pane sash windows with arched top panes and segmental arches, set in open boxing. Four similar windows are on the ground floor, flanking the front door.

Inside, the original open hall retains mortices for arch bracing in the tie beam, although the roof has been rebuilt. The north crosswing includes a 16th-century clunch fireplace and ceiling, with moulded joists and main beams. A four-centred moulded arch of clunch leads to the fireplace. The 1772 range features raised and fielded panelling below the dado in one room, and similar panelling to two cupboards with round-headed arches flanking a reeded fireplace in another room.
