Description
No. 2 Challis Green is a cottage with two main building periods. The southern part dates from the mid to late 17th century and features a timber frame that is partly exposed and roughcast rendered. It has a half-hipped tiled roof with an original red brick ridge stack and a later external end stack. The cottage is one storey with an attic, including one swept roof dormer and two 20th-century windows on either side of the doorway. The northern end of the cottage was added or rebuilt in the 18th century, also with a timber frame, clunch rubble infill, and plaster rendering. This section has a half-hipped tiled roof that is lower at the ridge. It includes another swept dormer and one casement window at ground level.
Inside, there is a red brick inglenook fireplace in the hall, a dentil cornice, and a boxed main beam. Stairs lead to two chambers above, featuring a landing balustrade of mid-18th-century column-on-vase type. The chamber over the hall has mid-18th-century sunk panelling on two cupboard doors flanking a small fireplace, which is adorned with a mid-18th-century mantelpiece and overmantel.
