Description
Toll Gate Cottage is a cottage dating from the late 18th century, with renovations in the 20th century. It is timber-framed and plastered, featuring thatched roofs and a 19th-century ridge stack. The cottage consists of two one-storey ranges that are possibly linked from the early 19th century. The range to the north-east has two units with the original entrance from the north-east, while the south-west range includes a half cellar. The main entrance, added in the 20th century, is located at the angle of the building and has a boarded door. There are two windows on the north-east elevation, one of which is an original 18th-century casement with leaded lights. The Cambridge road was turnpiked in 1765, leading to the construction of several toll gate cottages shortly thereafter. The ridge stack may have replaced an earlier framed chimney.
