Description

The Old Forge is a house that was formerly attached to a forge, located on the south-east side of High Street in Great Abington. It dates from the early and late 16th century, with rebuilding and extensions occurring in the late 17th century. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, featuring thatched roofs along with a red pantiled roof on the right side, which partly encloses the gable end stack and was once part of the forge's roof. The building has an end stack in the cross wing and another stack to the right of the main range.

It consists of two storeys, with a one-storey attic, and the main range includes a cross passage on the left and a cross wing made up of two timber-framed bays. A lower extension, which is one timber-framed bay, was added to the right in the late 17th century when the walls of the main range were raised, the roof was replaced, stacks were added, and floors were installed in the hall and cross passage. A staircase located in a rear outshut next to the main stack was moved in the 19th century, possibly when the building was divided into three separate dwellings.

On the main elevation, there are two 18th-century casement windows with leaded lights, along with one 20th-century replacement window featuring glazing bars. There is a boarded door where the cross passage is located, one horizontal sliding sash window and one casement window on the first floor, and a small horizontal sliding sash window in an eyebrow dormer. Inside, there are three late 17th-century red brick hearths, exposed timber framing that reflects the three building periods, and stop-chamfered floor frames.
