Description
Hawks Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid-16th century and features a late 17th century parlour wing. It is timber-framed and has roughcast render on a brick plinth, with a tiled roof that was formerly thatched. The roof has a ridge stack made of gault brick in the upper courses and red brick in the lower. The building has a plan consisting of three main bays along with a narrower fire bay and entry bay. There is a cross-passage between the hall and the service end on the left side. The house is one storey with an attic and includes one dormer and three casement windows, one of which has three leaded lights from the late 17th century with original fastenings. The doorway opposite the stack features a 19th century panelled door, and a bread oven projects from the rear wall.
The parlour wing was added to the front around 1680, displaying similar brickwork and banding to an extension dated 1687 at Manor Farmhouse. The side walls are timber-framed, while the gable end is now painted brick. The tiled roof has a parapet gable end supported by kneelers and features an original red brick plastered stack with a moulded string-course. This wing is two storeys with an attic, featuring a band at the eaves height and between the storeys. There are four symmetrically placed casement windows with original diamond mullions and saddle bars, although the glazing is later. The side walls retain original attic gables and each storey has one leaded light casement, except for the ground floor which has a three-light window similar to that of the main range.
Inside, the hall has intersecting main beams that are stop-chamfered and of substantial scantling, although the floor in the right-hand bay is much later and lighter, suggesting it may be a replacement. There are abutting inglenook hearths and a four-centred chamfered arch leading to one service doorway off the through-passage. The roof structure is a through-purlin type.
