Description
The Retreat is a cottage dating from the late 17th century, with one bay rebuilt in the mid 19th century. It features a timber frame that is stuccoed and incised to resemble stone ashlar, along with grey brick used for the mid 19th century section. The roof is covered with longstraw thatch and has an original ridge stack made of red brick with a small, single flue, as well as an early 19th century end stack. The cottage has a lobby entry plan and consists of three bays, with one storey and an attic that includes one dormer. The entrance features a lobby door with an early 19th century panelled design. There is one hung sash window and one horizontal sliding sash window, along with a service or kitchen door on the right side. It appears that one bay of the original cottage was likely removed in the mid 19th century and replaced with a grey brick extension that has a slate roof. At the rear, there is an outshut, and the building has two storeys with one sixteen-pane recessed hung sash window on each storey.
