Description
No. 3 Moat Lane is a cottage dating from the early 18th century, which was restored in the late 20th century. It features a timber frame with lathe and plaster rendering, topped by a steeply pitched tiled roof that was originally thatched. There is an early 18th century red brick chimney stack positioned at right angles to the ridge. The cottage has a single range and a three-bay plan with a lobby entry, and it is one storey high with an attic. There are two dormers, one of which is gabled, and three late 20th century casement windows along with a door. Inside, there is an inglenook hearth made of red brick with a stop-chamfered lintel, and the original staircase is located beside the chimney stack. Some inserted framing can be seen in the front wall, but the scantling of this late 17th or early 18th century framing is lighter compared to the earlier heavier framing found at No. 2 and 4 Little Lane, Melbourn, and the later lighter framing at No. 43 and 45 High Street, Melbourn. In 1842, the cottage was owned by James Dickason and occupied by Joseph Dickinson junior.
