Description

The Church of St George is a parish church that dates from the 14th century, with additions from the 15th century and further work completed around 1873 to 1878. It is constructed of fieldstone and rubble, featuring clunch dressings and a tiled roof. The church has a bell tower, an aisleless nave, and a chancel with north and south adjuncts. The west tower, built in the 15th century, includes a bell stage that was repaired in brick in 1625. It has an embattled parapet with a large central gargoyle at the cornice and three-stage diagonal buttressing.

The west window consists of two cinquefoil lights with vertical tracery set in a four-centred head. The openings in the bell stage are blocked, with the blocking in the north opening dated 1625. The south wall of the nave features two three-light windows with vertical tracery in four-centred arches. The south doorway has continuously moulded jambs. The north wall mirrors this with two similar windows and a two-centred arch leading to a doorway with continuously moulded orders in a square head.

The chancel was added in the 1870s. Inside, there is a 14th-century piscina in the nave with moulded jambs and a cinquefoil head. On the north wall of the nave, there are wall monuments dedicated to members of the Quintin family from the early 19th century, including a white marble sarcophagus for Thomas Quintin, dated 1806, signed by E Gaffin of Regent Street, London.
