Description

Lower Gatley End Farmhouse, also known as Rook Grove Farmhouse, is a house that was formerly a farmhouse. It dates from the late 14th century, with alterations and additions made in the late 16th century, late 17th or 18th century, and 19th century. The building is timber-framed, plastered, and clapboarded, with some brick nogging from the 16th century or earlier. It features steeply pitched plain tiled roofs that are hipped to the right-hand return. There are two gault brick end stacks and a ridge stack. The house has two storeys and the original structure likely had a three-unit plan with a central open hall. A late 16th-century parlour wing extends to the southeast, and there is a late 17th or early 18th-century addition at the angle.

On the west elevation, there are two ground floor and three first floor 20th-century casement windows, along with a 20th-century glazed lean-to porch and glazed door. Inside, the surviving 14th-century structure is exposed, showing vacant mortices to posts and internal partitions, wall plates with splayed undersquinted butted scarf joints, and evidence of a diamond mullioned first floor window with a shutter groove in the north bay. The centre-tenoned floor joists have later crude chamfers and may have been resited in the south bay. The southeast room features roll-moulded beams and joists, and there is a late 17th-century inserted floor across the original hall and bay to the north. The house has three hearths, which have been altered or sealed, and 17th and 18th-century doors, one of which has cocks head hinges. The roof has not been seen.
