Description
Nos 1 and 2 The Square in Horningsea are two dwellings that were originally a single house, dating from the early and late 16th century and the 17th century. The building has been recently restored and features a rendered timber frame with reused local brick. It has plain tile roofs with red brick stacks. The early 16th century central cross-gabled range is two storeys high, with a later jettied extension to the east that includes earlier storey posts. The west range is also two storeys with attics. The modern fenestration includes a jettied facade to the street with two casement windows that do not have glazing bars. The main entrance to No. 5 is in a modern flat-roofed, painted brick extension to the north. Inside, the building has exposed timber frames and stop-chamfered ceiling beams. There are back-to-back hearths that are contemporary with the street range, and some medieval Barnack stone has been inserted into the east wall of the earlier cross-wing.
