Description
The Priory is a house dating from the early 16th century. It is timber framed and plastered, later cased in 19th-century gault brick and painted. The roof is made of plain tiles, hipped with a gablet to the north, and features two ridge stacks. The building is two storeys high and has a T-plan layout, with a service wing to the north and a first-floor hall in the main range. The ground floor has a three-unit plan that jetties out towards the street.
On the south facade, there are three sixteen-paned hung sash windows on the first floor and two similar windows on the ground floor, all set in cambered brick arches, flanking a six-panelled door. To the right, there is a large three-light window in a segmental brick arch. The east facade is painted brick up to the cased jetty, with rough cast render on the timber frame at the first floor. This side features one hung sash window and one horizontal sliding sash window. The service range has two first-floor sixteen-paned hung sash windows and one blind window in the chimney bay, along with a similar blind window and a larger sixteen-paned hung sash window on the ground floor, both in cambered brick arches. The panelled entrance door is located to the left in the original cross passage position.
Inside, the building has an exposed, substantial timber frame with wide internal tension braces in each wall bay at the first floor. The roof has side purlins, and the main range features arched braced tie beams. The floor frames contain stop-chamfered beams and joists in the parlour. There are two hearths in the central chimney bay of the main range, along with a partly demolished brick stair. The large kitchen hearth is connected to the north by a cross passage, and there is evidence of a plank and muntin partition with entrances to the stair and butteries.
