Description

This milestone, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, is located opposite Coomb Grove Farmhouse on the west side of Ermine Way in Arrington. Made of limestone, the milestone features a bull-nosed design with stop-chamfered corners. The roadside face is inscribed with the distances to London (46 miles), Royston (8 miles), and Caxton (4 miles), and is painted white with black lettering.

As part of a series of milestones erected on the Old North Road, this example is significant for its legibility and original location, reflecting the historical development of the road network and the perception of distance before the motor age.
