Description

Valley Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with 19th century and later alterations. It is constructed from timber framing with red brick nogging and red brick. Some parts are rendered with stippled decoration and plain margins around the openings, while the left end and part of the front are covered in roughcast render. The roof is covered with plain tiles and features gault brick end stacks and a truncated rear lateral stack.

Originally designed as a two-unit central-chimney plan, the layout was modified to three units with the addition of a lower service bay in the 18th century. The farmhouse has two storeys and a four-window range, which includes a two-light casement on the left, followed by three early three-light centre-opening casements with leaded lights. The ground floor features a four-light window on the far left, a 20th-century window, a door, and a two-light casement. There is a doorway and a two-light casement on the first floor at the right end. The rear includes an 8/8 sash window, a lean-to projection with a three-light early casement, another door, early windows, and a projecting stack.

Inside, the farmhouse has chamfered bridging beams, plank doors, and a staircase located where the central stack opening was. The dairy in the lean-to has slate shelves, while the kitchen passage features a cast-iron pump and stone trough. A room on the left contains a brick oven and a copper. The cellar has a shallow brick vaulted ceiling and an external stair. The roof structure consists of queen struts with clasped purlins and collars.

Historically, the original farmhouse was extended in the 18th century and again in the early 19th century when a large wing was added, which later became the service wing. However, this large wing was demolished around the turn of the century.
