Description

The Old House is a two-cottage property, now combined into a single dwelling, dating largely from the 17th century, with additions and alterations made in the early 19th century. It represents a reconstruction of an even earlier building. The house is timber-framed and has been plastered, with some decorative pargeting remaining, along with sections of 19th-century gault brick and painted brick. The roof is thatched, featuring grouped shafts and a large ridge stack on the right-hand side. The building is one and a half stories high, plus a cellar in the extension. Original entrances from the street have been blocked. There are three ground-floor and one first-floor windows, all with glazing bars. Inside, the timber frame is exposed, and notable features include two cusped ogee arched door heads and a cambered bressumer over a 17th-century red brick fireplace. The first-floor fireplace has a mounded mantel shelf made of plastered brick. A rear wing contains an early 19th-century staircase, and retains original details.
