Description

College Farmhouse and the attached barn is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the late 16th century and 17th century, and renovations in the late 19th century. The building is timber-framed with plaster infill and has plain tiled roofs. A late 19th century ridge stack features three stacks and a common entablature. The structure has two storeys and an attic. The original unheated building, which is jettied to the north, consists of four bays and was formerly a guildhall or wool hall. It was converted into a farmhouse around 1560 by adding a kitchen wing to the west, which adjoins a five-bay early 16th century barn. The south bay and the roof of the two southern bays were rebuilt in the late 19th century, and the main elevation was remodeled to include a two-storey gabled entrance, a crosswing to the south, and a linking passage with a pent roof. The building features patterned bargeboards and applied patterned decoration on the windows, which include four first-floor and three ground-floor casement windows of various sizes. There is a panelled door with a rectangular fanlight and an exposed jetty on the north elevation.

Inside, the farmhouse showcases substantial exposed timber framing and floor frames, sealed windows with mullioned side lights and shutter grooves, a crown-post roof, and cambered tiebeams. The moulded mantel beam and fireplaces have been reduced in width for a late 19th century lobby entrance. The barn has a crown-post roof of five bays and was modified for use as a granary in the 18th or 19th century. Caius College, Cambridge owned the property from 1654 to 1825.
