Description
16 and 18 Church End is a house that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the late 16th to early 17th century and features a timber frame with plaster and roughcast render on a rubblestone plinth. The roof is plain tiled. There is a late 17th to early 18th century red brick ridge stack with a recessed panel on the northwest side, as well as an earlier projecting stack made of sandstone rubble with dressed clunch quoins. The building has a hall and crosswing plan and stands two storeys high.
On the first floor, there are two windows, one of which has a horizontal sliding sash. The three ground floor windows are modern. The doorway to number 16 remains, but the original baffle entry doorway has been blocked. The crosswing is also two storeys tall and features a jettied first floor, with the jetty beam and joists concealed by applied timber. There is one window on both the ground and first floors of the crosswing. At the rear, there is a gabled stair turret.
Inside, the bressumer over the hearth is made of clunch and has ogee and ovolo moulding. The main beam is stop chamfered, and the posts have jowled heads, with arched wall braces and braced tie beams. Number 16 has a jewel stopped and chamfered main beam and a blocked inglenook hearth.
