Description

Kitchens Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in the mid-17th century, with an extension added in the 18th century at the rear. The structure is primarily timber framed, with plaster and roughcast rendering, and some brickwork. It features plain tiled roofs and has a red brick chimney stack with three conjoined diagonally set shafts on a rectangular base, which has a moulded cornice; this stack has largely been rebuilt. The farmhouse has a hall and crosswing plan and stands two storeys high.

On the first floor, there is a three-light 19th-century wood casement window, while the ground floor includes two modern casements in small openings. The baffle entry doorway is sheltered by a lean-to porch. The southwest crosswing has modern windows on both storeys. The 18th-century additions at the rear are made of red brick, which is painted and tiled, and there is a 18th-century brewhouse at the front, constructed from timber framing and brick.

Inside, the farmhouse features stop-chamfered main beams, back-to-back inglenooks, clasped side purlin roofs, and downward wall bracing. The northeast gable has long straight wind bracing to the roof, and the posts have jowled heads. The house was likely built in 1664 by Christopher Charnock and was originally known as the Rose Inn, later called the Rose and Crown. An inventory from Richard Collins, who died in 1692, lists the hall, parlour, and kitchen along with chambers over the brewhouse and details the contents of the house.
