Description
No. 26 High Street is a house dating from the early 16th century, with alterations from the early 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century. The building features an exposed timber frame with plaster infill and an underbuilt jetty that has roughcast render. The gable walls are made of painted brick. On the left side, there is a square red brick ridge stack, with the upper courses rebuilt in gault brick, and a rear stack with reduced diagonal shafts. The house is two storeys high and has a 20th-century porch at the left-hand entrance. There are two transomed casement windows on both the first and ground floors.
Inside, the house has a finely carved cross beam and floor joists. The room to the north showcases early 18th-century details, including a wooden cornice, a bolection-moulded chimney piece, and a panelled overmantel with side pilasters, along with an early 18th-century staircase. An original wall painting has been exposed on the wall of a closed truss.
