Description

This is a mid-to-late 17th century cottage, later extended on its garden side in the late 20th century and now used as a restaurant. The building is timber framed with rendered walls and a long straw thatched roof. A brick ridge stack is positioned along the central axis, and there is a smaller, more recent stack at the end away from the road. Originally a three-bay design with an entrance lobby, the lobby was removed during the 20th-century extension, which also involved removing part of the front wall facing the garden.

Inside, the timber frame and roof structure are exposed. The timber framing is substantial and features straight downward bracing, even on partition walls, resembling the construction of a similar building at number 6 Little Lane. The building contains abutting inglenook hearths. Some of the original red brick is visible, while the remainder has been rendered. The roof structure showcases paired wind bracing between the main rafters and the purlin within the chimney bay. In 1842, the property was owned by John Hitch and occupied by Robert Deans.
