Description

Kennel Farmhouse is a house dating from the mid to late 16th century, with a late 19th-century addition at the rear. It was restored in the 1970s. The building features a rendered timber frame and a steeply pitched roof, which is now covered with cement tiles. The upper courses are made of late 19th-century grey gault brick, leading up to an original clear red brick ridge stack. An end stack was added to the High Street end in the late 19th century. The original layout consists of four bays in a single range, with a parlour facing the High Street and a cross-passage between the parlour and the hall. The house has two storeys, and the gable end facing the High Street jetties at the first floor. Although now obscured, the jetty beam is carved with folded leaf ornament. There are three horizontal sliding sash windows at the first floor and two shuttered hung sash windows, each with sixteen panes, at the ground floor on either side of a blocked doorway leading to the cross-passage. The late 19th-century addition is constructed of grey gault brick and is parallel to the rear of the original 16th-century house, also with two storeys. The main doorway is now located in the gable end of this addition.

Inside, the parlour features a main beam with folded leaf moulding and half-round roll moulding on the joists. The cross-passage has been incorporated into the parlour, and the site of the original partition wall or screen is indicated by mortices in one of the joists. On the first floor, there is a sealed original four-light window with diamond mullions. The wall frame includes curved downward bracing, and the roof is constructed with clasped side purlins made of substantial scantling, featuring curved wind bracing between the principals and purlin.
