Description

The Bridge, dating from circa 1415-26, replaced a wooden bridge constructed around 1110. It is built of barnacle ashlar with a brick parapet dating to circa 1716. The bridge features six arches supported by piers, with pointed cutwaters rising to form refuges along the parapets. Four original northern arches are pointed; the two southern arches are semi-circular and were rebuilt in 1716, replacing a Civil War drawbridge that had spanned the southernmost arch. The structure is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
