Description
5 and 6 The Quay are two cottages dating from the early 18th century. They are two storeys high and constructed of red and yellow chequered brick with roughcast ground floors, topped by a tiled roof. The front of the cottages is symmetrically designed, featuring a band between the storeys and brick pilasters at either end, which have Ionic capitals at the eaves. The western pilaster has a moulded cap at the first-floor level, and there is a moulded eaves cornice.
The cottages have five windows; however, the windows of No. 5 have been altered, while No. 6 features square-headed flush sash windows with exposed boxing and cornices on the ground floor. There is a central passageway through the ground floor, flanked by cemented pilasters with moulded caps. The door to No. 5 has been altered, whereas the door to No. 6 is from the early 19th century and has a reeded surround and moulded cornice.
At the rear of No. 5, there is a cottage that is either 16th century or early 17th century in origin, which has been altered. This cottage is also two storeys high and constructed of red Tudor brick, patched with 18th-century multi-coloured stock brick, and features a brick band at the first-floor level. Its doorway retains an original solid oak frame with a ledged and braced door.
Nos. 3 and 5 to 8 form a group with No. 1 Wellington Street.
