Description

No. 2 on Old Great North Road is a house that was originally a farmhouse and inn, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, featuring freestone and ashlar dressings, and has roofs made of Collyweston stone slates. It is two storeys tall with attics, designed in an L-shape that includes a lean-to in the angle and a lower range to the north. The gables have parapets with chamfered copings and end stacks, each stack topped with two ashlar shafts. Moulded corbels extend into moulded wooden eaves cornices that include modillions, and there is an ashlar band between the floors. A 19th-century gabled open porch leads to a glazed panelled door. The ground floor features two large sixteen-paned recessed hung sash windows, while the first floor has three similar windows, all with 19th-century chamfered lintels. There are also 17th-century windows in the side elevation, which may have been reused from a hall that was demolished around 1730. Inside, there is an early 18th-century staircase with a moulded string and rails, turned balusters, and square newels topped with ball finials. The farmhouse served as an inn around 1750.
