Description

No. 159 on Main Street is a house that was originally a farmhouse, dated 1730 and altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish garden wall bond and has a Swithland slate roof, with brick stacks at the ends and on the ridge. The building is designed in an L shape, with two storeys and an attic, featuring a three-window range. The central entrance has a six-panel door surrounded by a moulded wood frame and a segmental-inched brick head. There are 12-pane sash windows on both the ground and first floors, each with a similar brick head. The exterior includes a chamfered ironstone plinth, which has been patched with brick, a brick storey band, stepped brick eaves, and brick-coped gables. Above the door, there is a large limestone datestone inscribed with initials, including "M," and the date 1730, all set in a moulded surround. At the rear left, there is a full-height wing. Inside, the house features its own fireplace with a chamfered bressumer, chamfered spine beams—one of which has ogee stops—and a brick-vaulted cellar that includes a well.
