Description

The Elms at Asfordby Service Station is a house that has been converted into business premises. It dates from the mid-18th century and underwent alterations in the 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick, with the front rendered, and features a plain-tile roof and brick end stacks. It has a two-unit central staircase plan, stands two storeys tall with an attic, and has a three-window range.

The central entrance consists of a six-panel part-glazed door with a fanlight and a moulded wood surround. To the left, there is a canted bay window, and to the right, a shop window. The first floor has 19th-century horned sash windows, and above the central first-floor window is a small painted plaque inscribed "THE ELMS." The eaves are moulded and painted, and there are three hipped dormer windows. There are also single-storey extensions on both the left and right sides.

Inside, the hall is stone-flagged, and features ogee stop-chamfered spine beams, some of which are boxed. There is an open fireplace in the former kitchen with a stop-chamfered bressumer. A dog-leg staircase leads from the ground floor to the attic and has turned balusters. The roof includes one tier of chamfered purlins and some original rafters. Additionally, there are several 18th-century two-panel doors.
