Description

Lloyds Bank is a bank building constructed between 1924 and 1925 by H Munro Cautley for Lloyds Bank, featuring sculpture by Gilbert Seale and Son from London. The building is made of Portland stone ashlar and has a roof that is concealed behind a parapet. It is designed in the Baroque style and consists of one storey and an attic.

The front facade has three bays, with giant panelled pilasters that support an entablature featuring a frieze inscribed with 'LLOYDS BANK LIMITED'. The cornice has triple modillions, and there are three attic bays above with panelled pilasters, where the cornice breaks forward. The central bay has a segmental pediment and a stepped parapet above it.

On the ground floor, there are two moulded windows on the left, adorned with a scroll keyblock and carved stone festoons above. In the left-hand bay, there is a circular window with a similar carved festoon above, and a fine carved stone cartouche below, flanked by draped putti set in a recess over the doorway. The doorway features a bolection moulded architrave and panelled double doors. The carving work is attributed to Gilbert Seale and Son. Below the ground floor windows, there is a panelled pedestal with 'Lloyds Bank' inscribed in the frieze above. The window frames are made of metal and include margin glazing bars.

Inside, the bank features a full-height banking hall with moulded plaster borders on the wall panels and a moulded cornice above. The ceiling cornice includes large modillions and moulded plaster borders around the ceiling panels, one of which is glazed to allow for top light.
