Description

The Gatehouse, located at Number 1 on Buckden Road, is a former lodge to Brampton Park, built in 1825, likely designed by John Buonarotti Papworth. It served as the Gatehouse for RAF Brampton and is currently used as the Chaplain's Office.

The building is probably timber framed, featuring a roughcast render and a thatched roof. It has a broadly asymmetrical cruciform plan and is a single-storey structure topped with a hipped roof that has deep eaves supported by wooden posts, creating a loggia on the south side and a projecting porch on the east. The posts are encircled by slender metal rods resting on stone bases, topped with simply moulded caps. A rebuilt ridge stack with grouped shafts is positioned at the center of the roof.

The main entrance is located on the east elevation, featuring an early-19th century timber-panelled door adorned with iron studs and slender pointed arched, glazed openings in the upper section. This entrance is flanked by two canted bays, with an additional canted bay on the south elevation. The projecting bay on the west side showcases moulded timber details and decorative barge boards. To the left of the entrance, there is a casement window with a pair of lights featuring four-centred arch heads, which may be original; all other windows are from the 20th century. The north elevation is blind.

Inside, the building retains a three-room layout. The southern room contains an early-19th century reeded fireplace and cupboard. The central room, likely the original kitchen, has 20th-century fixtures and fittings. An early-19th century vertically boarded door with square motifs leads into the partitioned north room, which is used as an office. The entrance door is hung on a pair of 'HL' hinges and features contemporary hardware.
