Description
1 The Green is a 15th and 16th century house that was formerly an inn. It features a timber-framed structure with a two-bayed hall and a cross-wing to the west, which has 16th century inserted floors. The cross-wing was re-roofed and its walls were raised in height during the 16th century. The hall was extended by one bay to the east, with later lean-to extensions added to the north and south. The external walls are rendered, with some exposed framing, and the roofs are covered with old plain tiles. There is a ridge stack with engaged red brick shafts and an external side stack made of colour-washed brick on the hall. Modern casement windows are present in the gabled dormer and in a three-window range at the ground floor, along with a plank door to the right of the side stack. Inside, the hall features fine moulded ceiling beams and two inglenook hearths, one of which in the cross-wing is sealed. This building was once an important inn located on the Market Square, occupying a prominent position. Black Horse Cottage to the north-west is a 16th century extension of the cross-wing.
