Description
Black Horse Cottage is a late 16th century house located on the east side of Huntingdon Road in Houghton. The building is timber-framed but has been refaced in brick and extended in the 19th century. It features a plain tiled roof with a dentil eaves cornice and has a 17th century internal stack made of red brick. The cottage is two stories high and has a range of three hung sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor. The ground floor also has three similar windows set in cambered arches, along with a panelled door. Inside, the right-hand ground-floor room showcases fine carving on the chamfers, stops, and soffit of the main beam and middle rails, featuring a foliate motif. The cottage is likely a later extension of an adjoining 14th century open hall, now known as 'The Green'.
