Description

Nos 27 and 29 on St Peter's Road are matching blocks built as the County Gaol in 1828 by Thomas Wilkins, with an extension added in 1850 by Thomas Smith of Hertford. The buildings are constructed of gault brick, featuring stone quoins, a plat band, and window dressings. They are two storeys high with four windows, which include sashes with glazing bars. No 27 retains its original features, showcasing three pedimented sashes on the ground floor, while No 29 has two early 20th-century canted bays. Both buildings have a panelled door with a fanlight and an arched keystone head. They also feature a parapet and a hipped slate roof. No 27 served as the Governor's House, and No 29 was the Head Warder's House, which is said to contain a steel 'dark' cell.
