Description

Cromwell House is located on Huntingdon High Street and is thought to stand on the site of the House of Austin Friars, which was founded around 1285. The property was granted to the Cromwell family during the Dissolution and is said to be the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell. The house was largely rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century, around 1830, although it may incorporate some older elements.

The building is rendered with quoin pilasters and has two storeys with four sash windows that feature glazing bars. It has a solid porch with an arched entrance and side windows, a stone parapet, and a hipped slate roof. The garden front consists of five bays arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern, with the central bay slightly projecting and topped by a pediment. The ground floor windows in the center are set in arched recesses.

Alterations made in the 1930s are said to have uncovered foundations, parts of two doors, and several beams from the original Austin Friars structure. A plaque and coat-of-arms commemorate the birth of Cromwell in 1599.
