Description

Vine Cottage is a mid-17th century house which received a new facade in the early 19th century. It has a plan of three bays, including a central hall and stairbay. The building has a timber frame, with plaster rendering covering most of the exterior, except for the northwest gable end which is of soft, red brick. The roof is steeply pitched, covered in cement tiles, and features an original ridge stack with three diagonally set linked shafts to the southwest side.

The facade has open boxing and flush wood frames to a range of three hung sash windows with glazing bars. There are two similar windows with raised key blocks flanking the doorway. Above the door is a flat doorhood with a moulded cornice supported by scroll brackets. The four-panelled door has two small glazed upper panels. A small, single-storey extension, possibly a dairy, is attached to the left-hand gable end and has a hipped tiled roof. At the rear is an early 20th century two-storey brick wing.

The interior features exposed timber framing and retains the original roof structure, which is of clasped side purlin construction with collars halved over principal rafters. There is a square-section baluster staircase, possibly of earlier origin, with a closed string, one flight, and a landing. The staircase incorporates some early 17th century panelling.
