Description
No. 4 York Row is a house built around 1797, part of a terrace that extends from the Crescent along York Row. This terrace is part of the planned circus of the Castle Estate, designed and constructed by Joseph Medworth between 1793 and 1816. The house is made of local brown brick and features a slate roof with a side stack. It has three storeys and a basement, with three bays. The building has a stone-coped parapet and painted stone bands at the first and second floors.
There are three hung sash windows without glazing bars, which are recessed in cambered red brick arches with stone cills on the first and second floors. To the right of the entrance, there are two similar windows. The wooden doorcase is adorned with a broken pediment and fluted half-round columns, leading to a six-panelled door and a fanlight with patterned glazing bars. The entrance is accessed by two stone steps.
