Description
No. 5 Ely Place is a terrace house built around 1797, forming part of the planned circus of the Castle Estate designed and constructed by Joseph Medworth, who lived from 1752 to 1827. The building is made of local brown brick and features a slate roof with a side stack. It has three storeys and a basement, with four bays. The stone coping on the parapet and cill band adds to its architectural detail.
The windows are all recessed hung sashes, with four panes each, except for one twelve-paned window on the ground floor. These windows are set in cambered gauged red brick arches and have stone cills. There are also three blind windows on the second floor, one on the first floor, and one on the ground floor.
The entrance features a wooden doorcase with a broken pediment and half-round fluted pilasters. The six-panelled door includes radial glazing bars in the fanlight above. Additionally, there is a royal fire insurance plaque on the building.
